Attractions:

The difficulties involved in getting to Calla Mondrago have been well documented in the previous section of this review. Its secluded location away from major roads and settlements mean that the hire of a private car or taxi service is essential should one wish to take advantage of the attractions available within the local vicinity.

Having said this, there are several notable attractions at Cala Mondrago itself, however, owing to the seclusion of the resort, these are unlikely to extend beyond anything other then a peaceful and relaxed variety. A fine example of one of Cala Mondragos best attractions are the two beaches, refereed locally as the northern beach and the southern beach. In keeping with their relative isolation on the island, both beaches have remained untouched by tourists, and it is for this reason that they are both clean and uncrowded.

This is not to say however, that they are entirely primitive, and sun loungers and paddle boats are available for hire at both. Ideal for young children, the warm and gentle waters help to emphasise the slower pace of life on this part of Mallorca. If you are after a beach with a little more vibe, then the neighbouring beaches of Calo des Borgit and S’Aarador are also easily within walking distance.

In keeping with the holistic theme that this corner of the island epitomises, the beach is a part of the protected Mondrago Parc Natural. Consisting of over 2000 acres of wetland and farmland, there is a huge variety of flora including holm oak, juniper, rushes and reed beds. The corresponding fauna includes Coot, Black-necked Grebe, Redshank, Balearic lizard, snake, genet and rabbit. Although you might expect the park to be an exclusion zone in order to preserve its outstanding natural beauty, this is not the case. Open to visitors daily with access from the north and south edges, there are trails for walking, cycling and riding.

It must be said, that the experiences a tourist will receive here are completely different to the conventional image one associates with Mallorca. It appears that Cala Mondrago very much embraces its natural beauty in its own secluded region of the island whilst being happy to share these qualities with the visitor. It seems pleasantly surprising that in today’s age where villages are only too happy to sacrifice their native character in order to satisfy tourist cravings that villages like this still exist.

More information on the natural park, which includes both beaches, can be obtained from visitor centre at the Fonts de N'Alis car park which is open all year round from 9am to 4pm and which can be contacted by either telephone or fax on +(34) 971 181 022.

The level of entertainment laid on for tourists at Cala Mondrago remains basic and very low key, perhaps even non existent as some might say. But given the quiet demeanour of the place, this may come as no surprise. There is a restaurant and a couple of hotels here offer their own entertainment packages, but if you wish to add variety during your stay, then again, the need to hire a car becomes apparent.

The neighbouring towns of Cala d'or and Santanyi are larger in size, and as a result offer more opportunities as far as restaurants and bars are concerned. Furthermore, the purchasing of every day convenience goods can prove to be troublesome, and the aforementioned villages offer greater variety in this respect too.

Finally, for those that do make the wise choice and opt for car hire, the nearby market at Felanitx is considered one of the best in Mallorca where some real bargains are to be had. A word of advice, be prepared to haggle! Additional markets are held in Santanyi every Wednesday and Saturday mornings, which may well provide the best options as far as shopping is concerned.

It has perhaps become clear to you, the reader, that Cala Mondrago is a special type of place which one must be absolutely sure they wish to visit. You may have also formed the impression that Cala Mondrago bears little resemblance to the majority of resorts found in Mallorca. This is not a place which offers tourists many wide ranging attractions day and night. What is does offer however, is a piece of Mallorcan culture that is seldom seen elsewhere on the island.

This is a Mediterranean resort of old, where peace and tranquillity is firmly embedded in the secluded nature of the village. If you are happy to experience the authentic side of Mallorca in basic surroundings, then you are sure to be rewarded, with some of the finest scenery the Balearics has to offer.
